Successful Screening
We recently completed screening all 3’s and 4’s students on their ability to recognize upper and lower case letters, letter sounds and rhyming. The results are excellent.
3’s
61% of students scored between 77% and 100%
22% of students scored between 51% and 76%
17% of students scored 50% or less
4’s
88% of students scored between 77% and 100%
10% of students scored between 51% and 76%
2% of students scored 50% or less
Many of our 4 year olds are emergent readers, some are reading at a first or second grade level. Most of our 4’s can successfully rhyme, while many threes still struggle with this phonemic awareness skill.
Summer Maintenance
Studies, as well as our own experience, indicate that a break from school of more than 6 weeks results in a significant loss of academic skills. Below are some ideas to reinforce your child’s skills.
- Read to your child. Pick out letters and words for your child to identify.
- Watch Sesame Street.
- Play letter and sound games while driving in the car.
- Use traditional nursery rhymes and Dr. Seuss books to reinforce rhyming.
- Have fun with the “Animaletters”, all 3’s make them every year.
- Attend CASY Summer Fun Camp, we’ll do lots of phonemic awareness.
Parent support makes a huge difference during the early years of school, but don’t push too hard. No workbooks please. It should always be hands-on-fun!
