CASY SUMMER SCHOOL
EVEN BETTER IN 2010
This year we are tweaking our “Summer Fun” camps to include more science, math and phonics. Student testing indicates that much progress in phonemic awareness, letters and sounds, is lost over the summer. This summer we will reinforce these skills daily. Our videos (ten minute segments per day) were selected because: in addition to being FUN and entertaining, they lend themselves to lots of science, math, language activities and discussion. Hands on FUN!

Session 1: June1-10 - CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS – The weather is different in Chewandswallow. Instead of rain and snow, food falls from the sky. We will learn about weather (temperature, humidity, clouds, snow, rain, hail, wind, etc.). We will measure, write and read recipes, do “Cooking Math” and make meatballs. Our chefs will learn much with their culinary creations.
Session 2: June 14-24 - LION KING – Ask preschoolers to name animals and you generally get giraffe, lion etc. We are fascinated with Africa’s animals and the African jungle and plains. Amazing animals, amazing music, amazing learning opportunities. Join the safari.
Session 3: June 28-July8 – LAND DOWN UNDER (The Rescuers) Australia has animals unique to the world. There are koalas, kangaroos and snakes, with unique geography and the Great American Reef. There is so much to learn! We’ll talk about the equator and reverse seasons. We’ll make cork hats to keeps the flies away, and make boomerangs and observe their unique flight patterns. Good-day Mate!
Session 4: July 12-23 - CARS – A great story, Lightning McQueen is a very fast car with a big heart. McQueen revitalizes radiator springs (depiction of Route 66 in Arizona) campers will build and race cars, learn about inclines and friction, experiment with simple machines and learn about the American Freeway System.
Session 5: July 26-Aug.5 - ICE AGE III – DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS - Wooly Mammoths and Sabre Tooth tigers introduce us to DINOSAURS! Children can’t get enough of them! The movie features Sid’s efforts to raise three baby dinosaurs. We’ll compare what it’s like to raise “dino” babies and human babies. Lots of science and high interest!
